Fly to Cape Agulhas for the best aerial whale-watching on earth
When visitors approach Cape Town in the airliners they are often fascinated by the fact that they are approaching the Southern tip of Africa. In reality 99% of them do not get to see Cape Agulhas but settle for Cape Point at the end of the Cape Peninsula.
The beauty and mystique of Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa and the rugged and remote De Hoop Reserve and Marine Protected Area. Whale watching from the air and form land around the De Hoop Reserve in the bay that can host many hundreds of Southern right whales at any one-time during whale season. Learn about the natural history and fynbos of the region and discover how every one of the 8 billion humans on the planet today can trace their ancestry directly back to a tiny group of hardy humans who survived along this stretch of coastline around 120 000 years ago.
Depart the V&A Waterfront by helicopter, winelands pickups are also available on request. Fly along the coast past Hermanus, Gansbaai, over Cape Agulhas, stopping either at Lekkerwater or Bloukrans in the De Hoop Reserve. The helicopter will occasionally circle areas (to ensure these moments are captured) when spotting whales with their calves, dolphins and sharks. Upon arrival at Bloukrans guests will enjoy champagne celebration followed by a beach and rockpool safari (hosted by a marine biologist) and/or a fynbos and wave walk (tide dependent). These private walks are approximately 1 to 1,5 hours. The helicopter will depart at 08:30 and return at 16:30. Whale season is from July to November each year and this depends on the migration of Southern Right Whales.
